Khayri McLean’s girlfriend sobs ‘every day will be like this’ after boy knifed to death
The devastated young girlfriend of a 15-year-old boy knifed to death near his school gates cried as she returned to the scene to see the tributes left in his memory.
Shyana James, 16, broke down and sobbed “every day will be like this” at the pedestrian crossing in Huddersfield, West Yorks., where Khayri McLean, 15, was murdered on Wednesday.
The teenager had been messaging his girlfriend on Snapchat as he walked home ready to meet her, when he was set upon by a masked attacker with a knife.
Traumatised students saw him “pinned to the ground and stabbed repeatedly” before teachers rushed to his side to try and save him.
West Yorkshire Police were called at around 2.55pm and Khayri was rushed to a trauma unit at Leeds General Infirmary.
Police launched a murder probe following his death just hours later, and arrested a 16-year-old boy at around 5am on Thursday.
Flowers, candles and Yazoo milkshakes have been left in a colourful tribute near North Huddersfield Trust School where Khayri was a student.
The 16-year-old-boy remains in custody as police officers continue to comb the area for the clues.
Shyana, who was too upset to speak further, was among the trickle of mourners that have visited the site this morning after a police cordon was lifted.
One card left at the scene read: “With the heaviest of hearts I send my deepest love to you all.
“Marcia I am so sorry you are having to go through this pain. We live in a cruel world. Sending love to all the family.
“Khayri I hope you rest in eternal peace. In my heart and thoughts, Cherie xx”
Another tribute read: “Dear Khayri, you had a beautiful future ahead of you but life was taking away from you at such a young age. Fly high.
“DJ Khayri, forever 15.”
A third friend wrote: “Khayri, miss you so much, couldn’t have asked for a better friend.
“Thank you for always being there for me.
“Love lots, Diamonds.”
