Boy, 15, arrested over killing of pupil stabbed to death outside school
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the death of pupil Khayri McLean who was fatally stabbed outside his school, police said.
He is the second teen to be arrested in connection with the death of the lad, who was also 15, West Yorkshire Police said.
Khayri was fatally stabbed close to the entrance of North Huddersfield Trust School (NHTS) in Woodhouse Hill, Huddersfield at 2.45pm on Wednesday.
The force previously arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of murder on Thursday.
In a statement, West Yorkshire Police did not specify what the 15-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of, adding he was still in custody.
The statement said: “Police investigating the murder of 15-year-old Khayri Mclean in Huddersfield have arrested a second youth in connection with the incident.
“The 15-year-old male was arrested yesterday and is currently in custody. A 16-year-old male who was arrested yesterday also remains in custody.
“Officers from West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major enquiry team (HMET) are continuing to conduct enquiries into the death of Khayri, who died after being stabbed on Woodhouse Hill, Huddersfield, on Wednesday.”
The Mirror told today how Khayri’s distraught mother held him as he lay dying, according to witnesses.
Speaking on Thursday, his heartbroken girlfriend Shyana James, 16, revealed how she had rushed to the scene in a taxi to find Khayri lying on the floor dying with his mother, Marcia, by his side.
She revealed how he’d even sent her a picture of the spot where he was about to be fatally stabbed on Snapchat.
Speaking at the scene while wearing Khayri’s coat, she sobbed: “He was the love of my life. We were talking about our future the other day. He was just the best person I knew.
“The last thing he said was I can’t wait to see you.
“He just told me how his day had been, he just said, ‘it’s been really good,’ and sent me a picture of him walking home, right by the bollards where he was killed.
“He would do anything for me, he would drop everything if I had something going on to be there.”
Shyana broke down and sobbed “every day will be like this” at the pedestrian crossing in Huddersfield, where Khayri was murdered.
Traumatised students said they saw Khayri “stabbed repeatedly” before teachers rushed to his side to try and save him.
West Yorkshire Police were called at around 2.55pm and Khayri was rushed to a trauma unit at Leeds General Infirmary.
Police launched a murder probe following his death just hours later, and arrested a 16-year-old boy at around 5am on Thursday.
One card left at the scene read: “With the heaviest of hearts I send my deepest love to you all.
“Marcia I am so sorry you are having to go through this pain. We live in a cruel world. Sending love to all the family.
“Khayri I hope you rest in eternal peace. In my heart and thoughts, Cherie xx”
Another tribute read: “Dear Khayri, you had a beautiful future ahead of you but life was taking away from you at such a young age. Fly high.
“DJ Khayri, forever 15.”
A third friend wrote: “Khayri, miss you so much, couldn’t have asked for a better friend.
“Thank you for always being there for me.
“Love lots, Diamonds.”
